Following the success of its 2012 participation to Salone del Mobile and the establishment of a sistership program with Milan Design Week launched in that occasion, Beijing Design Week (BJDW) returns in the spaces of Ex-Ansaldo in Zona Tortona  with an unprecedented program of both exhibitions and events – a prelude to the regular appointment of late September hosted by the capital, which this year reaches its third edition.

While affirming its role as the internationally recognized event dedicated to design in China, BJDW renews its mission of support, promotion and development of the domestic design field, with a cultural project of new as well as consolidated partnerships, under the aegis of its appointment as UNESCO City of Design in 2012.

The project for Salone which occupies the entire 900sqm of the Officine Creative Ansaldo, features the work of more than 30 among designers, brands and independent studios from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, presented within a thematic journey inspired by the richness of food culture, conviviality and the social complexity of its rituals.

Developed under the artistic supervision of Beatrice Leanza, new creative director of Beijing Design Week, the project is designed along two main frameworks:  “A TASTE OF CHINA – DESIGN AROUND THE TABLE”, promoted with the special collaboration of ‘Show the World’, a non-profit cultural association dedicated ot the valorisation of Chinese ethnic crafts and heritage; and “SLOW SEATING, TEA DRINKING”, curated by Zhu Xiaojie, which bears continuity with the project presented last year in Milan (Slow Seating, 2012).

The exhibition is conceived as a voyage across objects, furniture and tableware articulated across interlinked stage-sets which reflect on the practice and meaning of ‘sharing around the table’, by alluding to how contemporary lifestyle, trends and stylistic choices are informing traditional as well as changing habits, both in the private and the public realm. So, the changing domestic environment of the new family unit, street food and markets, the art of the banquet, and tea culture – these are all symbolic repositories of both material and intangible heritage of  times present and past.

The space design is realized by the Milan-based studio dotdotdot (www.dotdotdot.it) which will develop a live theatre of images, visual and material references drawn from literature, cinema, traditional arts and crafts, rendering an interactive environment of ‘moving spaces’ – and thought to contextualize more emphatically the creative ramifications of creatives and designers of different generations. From well-known figures as Zhang Yonghe, Neri&Hu, Freeman Lau, Alan Chan among other active brands and designers, as well as young and emerging voices, so offering a ‘taste’ of the bewildering variety of contemporary expressive languages, where aesthetic and conceptual factors as well as formal, technical and material strategies are at play between tradition and avant-garde.

Visitors will also find relevant information about the upcoming BJDW, which this year will see Amsterdam as its Guest City and will be represented in site of the show.

The participation of BJDW to Salone 2013 sports as well a series of events, performances and talks realized in collaboration with its contributing sponsors and institutions, and is made possible thank to the continued support of Red Star Award and China Red Star Macalline Group.

The  project is also accompanied by an illustrated catalogue featuring texts, images and information about the featured works and the designers, and is realized by the Beijing-based D-T-Z-W Design studio (www.d-t-z-w.com).

Un progetto per Milan Design Week 2013 – Zona Tortona

Beijing Design Week (BJDW) torna al Salone del Mobile negli spazi dell’Ex Ansaldo in Zona Tortona in seguito al successo ottenuto con l’edizione 2012 e al gemellaggio allora siglato con Milan Design Week, presentando un ampio ed inedito programma di mostre e incontri che vanno ad anticipare l’appuntamento di fine settembre a Pechino, giunto quest’anno alla sua terza edizione.

Confermandosi come il principale appuntamento internazionale dedicato al design in Cina, BJDW rinnova la sua missione a sostegno, promozione e sviluppo di questo settore, con un progetto culturale sotto l’egida del titolo City of Design – conferitole dall’UNESCO nel 2012 –  che si avvale di nuove parterniship oltre a quelle già consolidate.

Il progetto espositivo occuperà gli oltre 900mq delle Officine Creative Ansaldo e presenterà i lavori di 30 tra designer, aziende e studi indipendenti provenienti da Cina, Hong Kong e Taiwan, in un percorso tematico che si ispira alla ricchezza culturale legata alla convivialità, al cibo e alla complessità dei rituali sociali ad essi legati.

Sviluppato sotto la supervisione artistica di Beatrice Leanza, nuovo direttore creativo di Beijing Design Week, l’evento milanese si struttura in due atti: il primo “A TASTE OF CHINA – DESIGN AROUND THE TABLE”, promosso con la speciale collaborazione di  ‘Show the World’, associazione culturale non profit dedicata alla valorizzazione del partimonio etnico cinese; il secondo “SLOW SEATING, TEA DRINKING”, a cura di Zhu Xiaojie, che riprende il percorso intrapreso dal designer nel 2012 con il progetto “Slow Seating” sempre a Milano.

La mostra è ideata come un viaggio tra oggetti, prodotti d’arredo e decoro, articolato in diversi scenari che, come capitoli a soggetto, riflettono sulle pratiche e sui significati legati alla dimensione della ‘condivisione attorno alla tavola’, allundendo a come nuove abitudini di vita, mode e scelte stilistiche siano un indicatore della continua evoluzione di usi e costumi, tra tradizione e contemporaneità, nella sfera pubblica e in quella privata. L’ambiente domestico, incentrato su un nuovo nucleo familiare, i mercati e il cibo di strada, l’arte del banchetto e la cultura del tea: sono questi alcuni dei contenitori simbolici in cui i segni di un patrimonio tangibile e intangibile, tra passato e presente, si fondono e reinventano.

L’allestimento è realizzato  dallo  studio milanese dotdotdot (www.dotdotdot.it) e sviluppa un teatro vivente di immagini, suggestioni visive e materiali tratte da cinema, letteratura, arte e artigianato, rendendo la mostra un luogo interattivo di ‘spazi in movimento’, con l’obiettivo di contestualizzare in maniera più enfatica le ramificazioni creative di designer e creativi di diverse generazioni. Da affermati brand e designer, tra i quali spiccano Zhang Yonghe, Neri&Hu, Freeman Lau, Alan Chan a studi locali e giovani emergenti meno noti ma degni di visibilità, per offrire un ‘assaggio’ della grande varietà di linguaggi espressivi contemporanei, in cui vengono messi in gioco fattori estetici e concettuali, strategie formali, tecniche e materiali,  tra tradizione ed avanguardia.

All’interno dello Spazio Ansaldo i visitatori troveranno anche informazioni sull’edizione 2013 di BJDW, che quest’anno vede come sua Città Ospite Amsterdam, alla quale sarà dedicata una sezione della mostra.

Il programma espositivo di BJDW al Salone 2013, che avviene sotto il patrocinio del Comune di Milano, si accompagnerà ad iniziative collateriali quali eventi, performance e talk realizzate in collaborazione con le istituzioni e gli sponsor del progetto, reso possibile anche grazie al continuo supporto di Red Star Award e China Red Star Macalline Group.
