EXHIBITION BY ADAM NANKERVIS AT THE EMMA THOMAS GALLERY IN SAO PAULO, BRASIL
Adam Nankervis presents an excerpt from his diaries and sketches, photographs and installative immersions of the series, “upon a painted ocean…..” at Gallerie Emma Thomas 2014. Taking inspiration from the poem The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner by Colleridge, Nankervis in his ongoing investigation of geo-political, environmental and socio-sculptural investigations, suggests a potentially dire forecast in the ongoing dilemma of global conflict, environmental neglect, in the course of an allegory of a ship´s fate, at the mercy of nature, and the shroud of the metaphysical fog that immerses it´s fate. In the series of photographs, Nankervis has worked with David Medalla and Daniel Kupferberg, taking still photographs inter- performatively with the artists in evoking a series of excerpts, entitled The Albatross`Nest, suggesting the serpents that entangle the fiction of sailors on board a course-less ship, the rope on which the Albatross hangs, and the benign spirit of a defiant blooming and the transformative power that lay within adverse situations, in this instance, the seas cold mist, the defiance of beauty and transformation that can and does arise, incarnate in the portraits of Medalla. The series, evokes the flotsam jetsam, by the Albatross in its journey of regurgitated foods on the oceans, in installation, the plastic detris form a man made nest. The flotsam jetsam of the artists´journey, both in memory and collecting, experience and observation, forms the broader sweep and continuing building blocks of this portal, the photographic series, “upon a painted ocean….” that will expand with every installative incarnation.
