La grandiosa prima personale di Damien Hirst in Italia è un’operazione che, partendo da una brillante idea nata da miti e leggende, unisce magicamente l’arte del passato con il presente, trasformando reperti di arte antica in un nuovo grande successo nell’arte contemporanea.
Come afferma Elena Gena, la curatrice della mostra:”La possibilità di ammirare a Venezia, città di mare per eccellenza e crocevia tra Oriente e Occidente, parte di questo straordinario patrimonio, signica animare di nuova linfa la leggenda del naufragio dell’Incredibile e scoprire in che cosa consistesse la collezione di Amotan.”
E’ l’ultima strategia vincente del celebre artista inglese e Science Ltd., fatta filtrare con sapienza ed esperienza comunicativa attraverso i media per nutrire le speranze di ognuno di noi di trovare il tesoro, facendoci sognare e vivere una storia avvincente dai segreti degli abissi.

From Sunday 9 April to Sunday 3 December 2017, Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana – Pinault Collection presents “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable”. It is the first major solo exhibition dedicated to Damien Hirst in Italy since the 2004 retrospective at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples (“The Agony and Ecstasy”) and is curated by Elena Geuna, curator of the monographic shows dedicated to Rudolf Stingel (2013) and Sigmar Polke (2016) presented at Palazzo Grassi.
The exhibition is displayed across 5,000 square meters of museum space and marks the first time that Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, the two Venetian venues of the Pinault Collection, are both dedicated to a single artist.
Damien Hirst’s most ambitious and complex project to date, “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” has been almost ten years in the making. Exceptional in scale and scope, the exhibition tells the story of the ancient wreck of the ship Unbelievable and presents what was discovered of its precious cargo: the impressive collection of Aulus Calidius Amotan, a freed slave better known as Cif Amotan II, destined to the legendary temple dedicated to the Sun.
The exhibition highlights the longstanding relationship shared by the artist and the Pinault Collection. A key artist for the Collection, Damien Hirst’s work has previously been exhibited at Palazzo Grassi, where it featured in the museum’s 2006 inaugural exhibition “Where Are We Going?”. This group exhibition derived its title from the British artist’s steel and glass skeleton cabinet, Where Are We Going? Where Do We Come From? Is There a Reason? (2000-2004). Damien Hirst also featured in “A Post-Pop selection” in 2007. With “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable”, the Pinault Collection accompanies the British artist in making a dream come true by opening both Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, allowing the artworks to establish a dialogue between the two exhibitions spaces.

– Pinault Collection presenta “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable”.
La mostra costituisce la prima grande personale dedicata a Damien Hirst in Italia, dopo la retrospettiva presso il Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli del 2004 (“The Agony and the Ecstasy”), ed è curata da Elena Geuna, già curatrice delle monograche di Rudolf Stingel (2013) e Sigmar Polke (2016) presentate a Palazzo Grassi.
La mostra si estende lungo i 5.000 metri quadrati espositivi di Palazzo Grassi e Punta della Dogana, le due sedi veneziane della Pinault Collection che per la prima volta sono entrambe a date a un singolo artista.
“Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” è un progetto complesso e ambizioso, la cui realizzazione si è protratta lungo diversi anni. Eccezionale nelle dimensioni e nei propositi, la mostra racconta la storia dell’antico naufragio della nave Unbelievable e ne espone il prezioso carico riscoperto: l’imponente collezione appartenuta al liberto Aulus Calidius Amotan, conosciuto come Cif Amotan II, destinata a un leggendario tempio dedicato al dio Sole in oriente.
La mostra si inserisce nel rapporto di lungo corso esistente tra l’artista e la Pinault Collection. Damien Hirst è una presenza imprescindibile per la Collezione e alcuni suoi lavori erano già stati presentati a Palazzo Grassi in occasione delle mostre collettive “Where Are We Going?” (2006), che traeva il titolo proprio dall’opera di Hirst “Where Are We Going? Where Do We Come From? Is There a Reason?”, e successivamente nella collettiva del 2007 “A Post – Pop selection”. Con “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” la Pinault Collection accompagna l’artista inglese nella realizzazione di un sogno aprendogli contemporaneamente Palazzo Grassi e Punta della Dogana dove le opere dialogano in un gioco di rimandi tra i due spazi espositivi.
