THE SCARLET “A” stood for Adultery in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s transcendentalist novel of Puritan America. The heroine, forced to wear the stigmata letter of shame, proudly flaunts it as a red badge of courage. She finds her freedom in an inner landscape of defiance, which mirrors the untamed nature of the new world around her.
“A” dultury lost its aura of scandal with the advent of abortion rights. Reynolds’s sketchbook “Scarlett Letters” presents a new body of work, her first to examine the anatomy of live models. The mosaic of models find their freedom in the landscape of the letter.
“A” is for Abortion, Anarchy, Abolitionism, Anything: the choice of a future is ours in “A” rt. “A” can be Anywhere, and their mobility moves into Activist curricular connections.
Reynolds studied painting with Richard Pousette-Dart at Sarah Lawrence College, and graduated with a concentration in Women’s History.
She also has a BFA and an MFA from School of Visual Arts.
She taught at the Guggenheim Museum for seven years; currently she is a Gallery Studio Instructor at the Brooklyn Museum, and a Family Programs artist for the American Folk Art Museum.

In un’America puritana e retrograda del XVII secolo, La lettera scarlatta (The Scarlet Letter), il romanzo trascendentale di Nathaniel Hawthorne, pubblicato nel 1850, l’eroina Hester Prynne costretta a indossare la lettera “A” stigma del peccato, la sfoggia superbamente come se fosse il marchio rosso del coraggio.
Prynne trova la propria libertà all’interno di uno scenario di ribellione, in un nuovo mondo.
Con l’arrivo del diritto ad abortire, la lettera “A” abbandona l’aura dello scandalo intorno all’adulterio.
“Le lettere scarlatte”, il blocco degli schizzi di Reynolds, evidenziano una visione personale di un nuovo modello di libertà, dove l’anatomia dei modelli è inserita nello sfondo della lettera “A”.
“A” come aborto, anarchia, antiproibizionismo, alcunché; a noi la scelta di un futuro nell’ “A”rte. La “A” può essere dovunque: nei movimenti, nelle connessioni e nell’attivismo.
